Our legends of February-Turkish Legend

Akdamar İland

The Armenian abbot who once lived on this island has a daughter named Tamar, whose beauty is legendary. A young man who works as a shepherd in the villages around the island falls in love with this girl. She swims to the island every night to meet Tamar, the young shepherd. Tamar, on the other hand, awaits him every night with a lantern to reveal his place in the dark.

Aware of this, the father of the girl descends to the shore of the island with a lantern on a stormy night and is constantly shifting. The young swim in vain and loses power.

The young shepherd, who has lost his strength from swimming and is tired, drowns. "Ah Tamar!" With his last breath before drowning. she cries. Hearing this, the girl immediately leaves herself to the waters of the lake. The island after that day Ah Tamar! It begins to be called by name.

This legend has always been told since those days. While the name of the island was AHTAMARA, it is common among the people that it came to the present day as AKDAMAR due to its language stages.
